What is Marketing? – Traditional vs. Digital

Marketing is the action of promoting a product, brand, or service through different means in order to increase a group of consumers around the business or company. With the rise of the internet, two main means of marketing have dominated consumer-company interactions, such as traditional and digital marketing. Although both strategies are effective in accomplishing the task of driving consumers to their business, each type of marketing attracts a different group of consumers.

Digital:

Digital marketing is the utilization of online mediums such as websites and social medias for advertising of a brand, product, or service. This type of marketing is found everywhere online, including social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, etc.), websites, and emails. Digital marketing is particularly effective in including many opportunities for engagement, such as liking, sharing or clicking the marketed brand. This relationship between the consumer and the marketer allows the brands to see if the ads were effective in driving consumers to their website or service. Since digital marketing has the ability to create tailored content to the consumer that fits their interests based on other interactions, digital marketing software totaled more than $43 billion in 2019, reflecting how influential this realm of marketing is. $129.34 billion was spent in America on digital marketing in 2019. Unlike traditional marketing, digital marketing is less expensive due to the ability to have an online presence instead of paying to appear in a popular magazine that would be harder and more expensive to be in.

Traditional:

Traditional marketing is the use of channels that were heavily relied on before the expansion of online mediums. This marketing method is used in mediums such as billboards, posters, television, magazines, and newspapers. Traditional marketing is effective in its ability to be easily understood by consumers, as they often include eye-catching events or actions to drive people to their brand, product, or service. $109.48 billion was spent in America on traditional marketing, displaying how important this marketing strategy is in developing a strong consumer relationship. Unlike digital marketing channels, traditional marketing mediums are more permanent, allowing a target audience to form directly around the product or brand. In addition, traditional marketing mediums are usually more straightforward.

Which is better?

In the last five years, companies and brands have focused on digital marketing over their traditional counterparts. However, this change in focus does not directly correlate with one type of marketing being better than another. Both digital and traditional marketing have their positives and negatives; however, the utilization of both strategies allows companies and brands to reach a wide audience. Traditional marketing mediums, such as mail and magazines, are able to effectively target the older generations, while digital marketing drives millennial and Gen Z consumers to the brand, product, or service. The utilization of traditional and digital marketing together allows for a coherent marketing strategy that ultimately generates a collective consumer population.

Final Thoughts

Both types of marketing can work for any company; however, the leadership behind the company must realize the age group behind their consumers and use their marketing strategy to their advantage to gain the highest number of consumers.
